Art Classes and Workshops

We offer a variety of art classes all throughout the year. Below you will find a list of classes we have scheduled for the end of 2019, as well as the beginning of 2020. To help give our students plenty of one on one time, our classes are kept small and usually range from 4-6 students. Our classes are offered in a friendly and comfortable environment in the heart of Lexington. Class times will vary depending on the subject.

November 9, 2019: Learn the Art of Calligraphy

Have you ever wanted to learn Calligraphy but thought it was too difficult? Well we

are offering a beginner Calligraphy course just in time for the holidays! Come out

and join us to learn this beautiful script. This class has been designed to provide a basic, yet thorough understanding of the beauty and art of Calligraphy.

During this class we will learn about the materials needed and the basics for creating

beautiful words and phrases. All materials will be provided for during the class, along with

goodies for you to continue practicing at home! There will be a total of 8 spots available.

The class will be from 10am to 1pm and held at Start Here in Lexington VA. The cost

for this class is $49.00. TLHArtist members will receive an additional discount.

EARLY REGISTRATION: Classes Scheduled for Jan - April 2020

In an effort to lower the cost of the class and provide art instruction for everyone, we are offering students the options of bringing their own materials.

You can either bring your own art supplies or purchase our supply kit at the time of class registration. If you choose to purchase the supply kit, simply add the kit to your cart from the class registration page. Supply kits are $20 during early registration, in addition to the cost of the class and will be given to the student the first day of class. Each supply kit purchased will be theirs to keep. A materials list for each class is provided on the class registration page.

Jan 25 and Feb 1, 2020: Intermediate Acrylic Course - 2 Day Package

This course will occur over a 2 day period.

Class will meet on two consecutive Saturdays: Jan 25 and Feb 1 from 9am to 12pm in Lexington.

This course will be geared to expand the knowledge of a beginner acrylic painter. 

We will be covering the following:

  • Expanding our understanding of acrylic paint, use of color, light/shadow, and perspective to create more realistic and natural paintings 

  • Advancing our knowledge of brush strokes, brushes, and mediums to create more visually appealing effects

  • Enhancing our knowledge of painting materials to have more thorough understanding of how these tools can be used to create the desired effects

  • The benefits of varnishing, glazing, and washing

 

This is a TWO DAY CLASS. Each class will explore different avenues with painting in acrylic. However, if you can not attend both classes, you are more than welcome to attend one or the other as each class will stand independently from the other.  Individually purchased classes will also receive the early registration discount, but will not receive the two day package deal discounted rate.

 

As always, we will be practicing our newly learned information in class. At the end of class, each student will have a finished piece that can be taken home with them. To reserve your spot, click here

Feb 22, 2020: Intermediate Colors Class

This class will be held on Feb 22 from 9am to 1pm at Start Here in Lexington.

This class is designed to help individuals enhance their basic color skills. We will be exploring the effects of light on color and learning how to translate that into your work. We will also be learning how to "step away" from simple store bought "tube" colors to learning how to color match, color create, color "save" and how to apply these colors correctly to create a realistic piece.

 

As an added bonus, we will begin learning portrait coloring and how to apply colors to set moods and tones in a piece. As always, we will be practicing our newly learned information in class. At the end of class, each student will have a finished piece that can be taken home with them.

March 7 & March 14, 2020: Intermediate Oil Course - 2 Day Package

This course is will occur over a 2 day period. Class will meet on two consecutive Saturdays - March 21 and March 28 from 9am to 12pm in Lexington. This course will be geared to expand the knowledge of a beginner oil painter. 

Over this 2 day course, we will be covering the following:

  • Expanding your understanding of oil paint itself, its properties, its flaws and strengths and how to apply this information to your painting

  • Advancing your knowledge of brush strokes, brushes, and mediums to create more realistic effects - our line of focus will be landscapes with slight touches on portraits

  • Enhancing your knowledge of painting materials and how the smallest details affects your work - such as cotton vs linen canvas, primed vs un-primed, etc. 

  • How to work with mixed media to help create unique and visually appealing paintings. 

  • Enhancing your knowledge of color mixing with limited palettes

  • Various mediums and learning how they affect our pieces

April 18, 2019: Fundamentals of Graphite - Level 2 (Intermediate)

This class will be held at Start Here in Lexington on April 18 from 9am to 12pm.

 

It is designed to continue the growth of a students basic understanding for graphite
drawing to help improve their skills.

During this class we will:  

  • Emphasize and focus on the concept of light, shadow, and contrast and translating this into creating realism artwork.

  • Discuss professional materials, work with some of these materials, and see how these materials can help you boost your artwork to the next level

  • Work on graphite application creating a more smooth and photographic looking final piece

  • Discuss and practice on how to turn these pieces into painted works of art

Private Paint Parties - Paint Canvas, Wine Glasses, Mugs, or Pick Your Own

Invite your friends...enjoy goodies and refreshments...sit back, relax and have a blast unleashing your inner creativity! No pressure and no competition … just you and friends!

Even if you’ve never painted anything before, or haven't in years, you’ll have a chance to create something new in a very friendly and laid back fun environment! With gently guided instruction, I will walk you step by step through a wonderful

and fun painting. You will leave with a one-of-a-kind masterpiece ready to hang on your wall!

We will take care of the setup and cleanup for each event, making the experience truly hassle free for the host & the guests.

 

Groups of all sizes and all perceived artistic ability can benefit from this fun and rewarding activity. The key thing to remember is that everyone is an artist; it is just a matter of knowing where to put the paint!

We supply everything you need to make your art party as fun and creative as possible. We supply canvas (or whatever painting surface you have chosen), paints, brushes, supplies, any necessary art materials, assistance and step by step guidance.

The experience will be unique - catered just for YOU!  No hassles, no hidden fees. It's that simple!
